What you’ll be doing...

In this role you will be a key strategic advisor primarily to Human Resources and business leaders through:

  • The provision of timely and effective employment law advice and counsel to internal teams on a full range of international employment law issues, including hiring, discipline, grievances, workplace investigations, redundancies, compensation and benefits, and collective consultation processes.
  • The drafting of employment agreements, separation, severance and retention agreements and other employment documentation.
  • Active management employment cases and projects.
  • The review of policies, procedures and issues impacted by employment law legislation and regulation and across Verizon International.
  • Policy Guidance and Compliance – provide ongoing review of Verizon’s employment policies and practices, updating as appropriate to reflect changes in laws or regulations or internal practices. Supporting the roll out and implementation of updated policies to maintain Verizon’s people compliance in all territories. Policy areas will include commission and incentive plans, contracts of employment, and core people policies such as disciplinary and redundancy.
  • Advice and Counsel – provide internal agencies and functions across Verizon International with expert advice on employment matters directly and, where necessary, through the advice of outside counsel.
  • Deal Support – support acquisitions, divestitures and sales transactions by structuring employment and employee related provisions in M&A, master service and transfer agreements, conduct due diligence reviews, and ensure transactions comply with applicable local laws.

  • Future Risk & Consistency – monitors the evolving employment law landscape across the major jurisdictions in which Verizon operates in EMEA, APAC and LatAm to identify material risks and to examine ways of mitigating those risks (e.g., by establishing new policies, practices and/or procedures to address future risk). Helps design compliance training and assist with training line of business managers and Human Resources. Liaises across Verizon’s lines of business to help ensure consistency of employment practices and policies.
  • Case Management – investigate employment related matters and help facilitate the timely resolution of employee disputes. Defend, supervise and manage employment-related claims and litigation, including managing outside counsel and responding to administrative charges, complaints, legal letters, settlement demands and claims globally. Negotiate appropriate resolutions to claims and other pending matters.
  • Employee Representation in International – provide support and legal advice in furtherance of the effective and compliant management of Verizon’s relationships with its Unions, Works Councils, Employee Representative Groups and other consultation organisations.
  • Education and Awareness – update, inform and train internal business leadership on new aspects of law and prepare personnel for changes in key areas, such as, parental pay, equal pay, disability discrimination.
  • Working with Internal Counsel – work cooperatively with U.S. employment law and other legal department counterparts to support ongoing work efforts and ensure a cooperative, collegial work environment.

    What we’re looking for...

    You'll need to have:

    • Qualified lawyer with up to 6-12 years PQE (however all periods of relevant prior experience will be considered)
    • Significant international experience is a key differentiator
    • Applicants will need to demonstrate strong business acumen and the ability to operate successfully in a fast paced and demanding work environment

    Even better to have:

    • Prior in-house experience desirable
    • Availability to work from Reading and London offices
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Ability to work autonomously as well as in a team environment
    • Excellent client relationship and interpersonal skills
    • Strong research, analytical and problem-solving skills
