What you’ll be doing...

The Communications Director for the Consumer Group, will design and execute the communications plans that leverages earned, owned, and corporate social channels to advance Verizon Consumer Group’s narrative and priorities in the marketplace, and lead public relations, influencer relations, corporate social channels and brand positioning.


  • Lead a talented team across specific regional geographies in the US responsible for the development and distribution of strategic PR communications and national/regional/local campaigns that influence and engage internal & external audiences important to brand reputation and “earned influence.”
  • You will act as the primary PR business partner to our Consumer Sales Group.
  • You will generate excitement for product and services in regional and local geographies e.g. device launches, new services and promotions. You will also ensure that national campaigns are more personalized and relevant in regional and local markets.
  • You will partner with our Consumer Marketing & Products/Customer Experience PR and employee communications teams to ensure that all communications plans are aligned.
  • You will serve as a media spokesperson for the Consumer Group covering wireless and wireline.
  • You’ll work closely with Consumer Group leaders to understand key priorities and focus areas, and work together to develop strategic external PR plans that support business initiatives.
  • You’ll create and build awareness of Verizon Consumer Group’s brand and message in a highly competitive, fast-changing market.
  • You’ll work with and lead agency partners to create audience-facing assets that get shared externally, including positioning of products and services, and news and announcements, as well as thought leadership.
  • You’ll work cross-functionally across all the business teams, as needed, to develop assets with high impact to increase our earned influence.
  • You will secure sustained and positive media coverage, coordinate timely responses to incoming inquiries, and lead rapid response during critical moments.
  • You will develop external "newsworthy" messages, creating new levels of awareness about Verizon Consumer Group’s innovations, and industry-leading successes to accelerate growth.
  • You’ll be responsible to elevate the company's internal & external message, bringing new perspectives and vision to clarify and showcase Verizon Consumer Group’s proven successes and unparalleled products and services, while building and strengthening customer loyalty.
  • You will lead a variety of projects from conception to completion, on time, on budget, bringing the most impactful idea to life in the best possible way.
  • This position reports to the Vice President of Communications, Consumer Group.
  • The role is based in our Basking Ridge, NJ office, with 30% travel expected.

What we’re looking for...

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Media, Journalism or related field.
  • 10+ years of successful work experience in PR, journalism, or related field. Other communication experience will be considered.
  • Extensive experience working with members of local and national media outlets, serving as a media spokesperson.
  • Experience leading teams and agency partners effectively, delivering desired outcomes and business results.
  • Experience developing and executing strategic communications plans and campaigns.
  • Ability to translate complex issues into easily consumable messages for a wide variety of audiences.
  • A self-starter, a risk-taker and a team player.
  • An action-oriented business leader who is focused on driving results.
  • Highly collaborative and invested in the success of the team and the client organizations.
  • Able to juggle multiple demands, manage shifting priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Able to understand client opportunities and transfer into actionable ideas.
  • Able to understand complexities of the business and navigate a matrixed organization across multiple disciplines.
  • Ability to provide strategic counsel to internal stakeholders, including senior leadership.
  • Experience managing crisis communications situations.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communications skills, including ability to craft content in a variety of formats while conveying a consistent brand voice.
  • Strong process orientation with a clear track record of implementing best practices that bring simplicity, efficiency and the highest possible quality.
  • Metrics driven with hands-on experience with analytic and tracking tools for media and social engagement.
