What you’ll be doing...

The Professional Services Network Engineer represents the delivery of network infrastructure projects, customer site services and customer premise equipment (CPE). As a Network Engineer you will support and manage multiple projects within the business customer base. The Network Engineer typically engages at the technology level within the customer base when solutions to identified business needs must be met through custom designs. You will regularly lead multiple projects and performs project activities such as planning, requirements gathering, design configuration and testing. Engagements typically reflect rapid development, integration, and implementation of network solution design recommendations.

The Network Engineer collaborates with the clients’ technical staff to ensure alignment and congruency between the client’s infrastructure and proposed custom solutions in order to effect a seamless integration and implementation of technologies. The Network Engineer will manage and take ownership of complex technical customer projects in such a way that each project is accomplished to the satisfaction of the customer Statement of Work; on schedule, quality assured, and within budget. As a Network Engineer, you will ensure all flow-down requirements are managed to overall project scope, including those occasions that may involve Third Party Vendors (TPV) and internal suppliers. Individuals in this position will rely on technical experience and understanding to ensure engineering milestones are achievable and aligned to solution end-state. You will ensure that customer projects are planned, coordinated, and communicated in a professional manner, keeping customer stakeholders regularly informed of progress, and ensuring that all stakeholder expectations are managed and customer committed dates are consistently met. As project lead, you will act as the project single-point-of-contact (SPOC) for all external customers and partners as well as internal team members on projects managed.

  • Solves client business problems through integration and implementation of custom network solution designs that are Verizon product/service agnostic.
  • Supports client-facing opportunities by leading on-site collaboration with client technical staff. May occasionally engage business, technical, and operations departments head levels.
  • Contributes to the development of unique design solutions that cannot be met by standard Verizon product/service offers.
  • Under the lead or supervision of senior engineers, assists in the development of Statements of Work to define agreements for specified work and related charges.
  • Collaborates with delivery team and the client to align business requirements in the SOW to the technical architecture proposed; probes to understand the potential impact of custom solutions to address the customer’s technology requirements.
  • Integrates and implements the design or redesign of infrastructure to meet the customer expectations.
  • Presents to the client a recommended integration and implementation plan, then assists clients in: Planning for the implementation of designed solutions; Identifying required sourcing skills; Managing change requests; Deploying technology.
  • Ability to complete configuration of network equipment onsite or remote. Equipment may be configured in a staging facility to replicate the customer network.
  • When applicable, and within area of technology expertise: Reviews existing network equipment configurations; Conducts limited discovery and analysis of customer interior routing; Documents requirements for design redistribution between interior and exterior routing in less-complex multi-site reciprocal failover topologies; Analyzes recommended technologies and makes recommendations on design changes for the situation.
  • Supports efforts to replicate a customer network in a non-production, sometime virtual environment to develop a proof of concept or identify a potential design issue.
  • Works closely with internal and external work groups as necessary to ensure customers’ requirements are met for delivery of contracted custom projects.
  • Supports the installation of customer hardware/software solutions either remotely or at local staging facilities.
  • Providing input to the Project Manager for inclusion on program reporting.
  • When directed as project lead, supports project implementation efforts and provides consultative support to client stakeholders: Executes network delivery project plans according to the Verizon Professional Services Delivery Methods centered on the PMI delivery model; Responsible for overall success of assigned projects including fulfillment of the technical requirements and adherence to the approved project scope and budget; Determines project responsibilities by identifying project phases and elements; assigning personnel to phases and elements; reviewing bids from contractors when external resources are required; Determines project specifications by studying product design, customer requirements, and performance standards; Completing technical studies; Preparing cost estimates; Determines project schedule by studying project plan and specifications; calculating time requirements; sequencing project elements; Controls project costs by monitoring expenditures; administering contractor contracts to ensure compliance; Reviews and employs project documentation which can include network diagram process documents for the customers’ network.
  • Relies on established Verizon and customer-provided procedural documents and vendor equipment documentation to aid in the development and execution of custom solutions.
  • Contributes to the development of the run book & methods & procedures to be used by the Managed Services Organization (MSO) for ongoing lifecycle activities.
  • Uses documented technology plan content to develop the proper method for implementing the portion of the client’s infrastructure within their purview.
  • Provides support to project implementation efforts by: Supporting the handoff to the Client Lifecycle Support counterparts following implementation on projects within area of technical expertise, assisting in the coordination of project transition and continues to provide technical consultation to the organization providing lifecycle support by assisting with regard to custom technical solution design throughout the transition phase.
  • Provides non-customer-facing contributions through activities including but not limited to representing Professional Services during technology events.
  • Gaining experience with PS Design, Configuration and Testing (DCaT) Grid hardware/software testing and maintenance.
  • Contributing to the development of use cases.
  • Identifying need for enhancements to current technologies (in VZ catalog).
  • Assisting with the development of training and delivery of training sessions, etc.
  • Assist with presales activities when requested, engages with core Sales Account Managers when necessary to discuss potential sales opportunities stemming from advancements or changes in technologies within practice area of expertise.

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

  • Associate’s degree or two or more years of work experience.
  • Three or more years of relevant work experience as a network engineer deploying, configuring, and advanced troubleshooting of routers and switches

Even better if you have:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or other technology focused degree.
  • Five or more years of experience as a network engineer including experience with:
    • Routing protocols (BGP, EIGRP, OSPF, RIP)
    • L2 networks (RSTP, STP, 802.1x)
    • MPLS
    • QoS
    • Advanced configurations
  • Experience successfully coordinating a staging facility for network project delivery.
  • Technical certification in relevant technology area such as CCNP or CCIE.
  • Effective relationship building skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise in network design –ability to lead a design related discussion with leading questions to fully vet a customer’s requirements and develop a proposed design fulfilling said requirements, identify potential impacts of a given design recommendation, knowledge of other technologies and their network.
  • Experience w/ any of following:
    • Cellular WAN technologies and solutions
    • WAN optimization
    • Wireless LAN
    • Datacenter technologies
    • Virtualization technologies and concepts
    • Security appliances and concepts
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in emerging tech such as SDN, NFV, etc.
  • SDWAM implementation
  • Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, and Visio.
  • Terminal Emulation skills: PuTTY or SecureCRT.
  • Skills in operating CUCM, UCXN, and UCCE.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP networking & Routing.
  • Knowledge of operation of both current Cisco IP phone models and their accessories.
  • Knowledge of Cisco TAC and how to communicate with them.
  • Good written communication and record keeping skills.
  • The willingness to work under pressure.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Intermediate skills on network trouble shooting and problem isolation.
  • Understand, execute and document a process flow.
  • Isolate, identify and correct configuration & network errors.
  • Knowledge of the operation of 4G Wireless modems and Wireless AP’s.
  • Understanding and experience with API integration.
