What you’ll be doing...

Verizon is looking for a talented attorney with initiative and drive to be an integral member of the Antitrust Practice Group. The Staff Counsel will work with a dynamic and fun team to advise the business on antitrust issues, help Verizon navigate complex strategic transactions and partnerships, respond to antitrust agencies’ requests, work on antitrust lawsuits, work with outside counsel and economists, coordinate with other legal department and business groups, and help move transactions through the antitrust-approval process. The position reports to the Vice President & Associate General Counsel for Antitrust.

  • Timely advise senior executives and other members of the legal department and business on antitrust issues.
  • Help navigate complex strategic transactions and advise on joint venture development and participation.
  • Advise on strategic and antitrust issues in connection with emerging technologies.
  • Antitrust Agency Requests
    • Manage and work with internal resources to comply with agencies’ requests.
    • Timely respond to the agencies’ requests.
    • Work with team to represent company in agency interviews and depositions.
    • Manage outside counsel and economic experts.
  • Antitrust Litigation
    • Participate in drafting of briefs, memoranda, and other court filings.
    • Help prepare Verizon employees for depositions.
    • Lead discrete projects with minimal supervision.
    • Assist with document review and production.
  • Manage outside counsel, economists, and consultants
  • Antitrust Approval of Transactions
    • Lead discrete projects with minimal supervision.
    • Develop internal business contacts who have data responsive to agencies’ requests.
    • Draft interrogatory responses.
    • Assist with document review and production.
    • Assist with providing antitrust advice to clients regarding the antitrust-approval process and, if applicable, a Consent Decree.
    • Some travel possible.

What we’re looking for...

You'll need to have:

  • JD degree and six or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Bar membership and needed licenses.
  • Three or more years of antitrust experience in government, law firm, and/or corporate legal department.

Even better if you have:

  • JD degree with strong academic performance.
  • Active and in good standing with a state or D.C. bar.
  • Complex business transactions experience.
  • Experience responding to requests from antitrust agencies, including the U.S. Department of Justice and the European Commission DG-Comp.
  • Experience working on document productions, including demonstrated proficiency with e-discovery tools.
  • Self-starter with the ability to make independent decisions and the judgment to know when to seek guidance.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple responsibilities in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with multiple internal groups.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle extremely sensitive and confidential information.
  • Experience researching legal issues involving innovative technologies and communications services.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel).
  • Experience with GSuite.
  • Policy experience.
  • Familiarity with the telecommunications industry.
  • Interest in technology, developing technological fluency, and learning about technological developments and their intersection with law.
  • Experience working with outside counsel, economists, and consultants.
  • Experience working on transactions at various stages of the antitrust-approval process.
  • Team player with appreciation for diverse work environment and perspectives.
