What you’ll be doing...

You will be responsible for providing oversight, and technical and process guidance to the Payroll Transactions team to ensure timely and accurate processing of all Payroll transactions. You will assess and determine accuracy for collection, calculation, and entering of data by the Transaction team. These transactions include those related to deductions, garnishments, newly-hired employees, special payments (commission, bonus, annual/long-term incentives, military, etc.), salary changes, sickness/short-term disability benefits, taxes, termination, and time reporting. You will ensure these transactions are controlled, effective and efficient. In addition, you will identify and implement process and efficiency improvements, find innovative ways to manage Global Payroll’s complex set of transactions to make processes more efficient and scalable, and work to ensure the highest level of quality of our Payroll operations and minimize operational risk.

  • Collaborates with Human Resources, Benefits, IT, Labor Relations, Accounting, Finance, and Field Operations in addition to providing support for external vendor relationships.
  • Provides technical subject matter expertise and related support to the Payroll Transactions team to ensure accurate and timely processing of Payroll transactions.
  • Provides guidance and support to decision makers on strategy, policy and technical issues based on significant quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • Continually reviews Payroll work practices and procedures for better operational efficiency, and to proactively identify and resolve potential issues in Payroll transactions and processes.
  • Drives standardization and consistent application of processes, policies and procedures across Verizon for the Payroll Transactions team.
  • Understands and helps review/ensure accuracy of gross pay to net pay, including earnings, deductions, garnishments, and taxes for exempt and non-exempt employees.
  • Works closely with the individual Payroll teams, stakeholders and/or third party vendors (as applicable) to proactively ensure processes are controlled, effective and efficient.
  • Develops and maintains procedures and policies for the Payroll Transactions team, as necessary.
  • Assists as a subject matter expert with the training and skill development initiatives of Payroll Transaction analysts.
  • Maintains responsibility for any technical issue escalations from internal Payroll employees and responds to customer inquiries in the capacity as a subject matter expert (Level 3), ensuring issue and error resolution.
  • Undertakes complex projects and responsibility for the development of business cases and implementation plans for the Payroll Transactions team.
  • Works with the Payroll Transactions and Operational Support Enterprise team to remain updated and compliant with all federal, state and local laws, and rules, as appropriate, and any impacts to our employees, including the scope of taxes, garnishments, wage and pay practices, and sickness/disability laws and regulations.
  • Stays current on industry standards by engaging in networking and benchmarking.
  • Supports year-end special annual incentive program payments, including Senior Management and expatriates.
  • Provides support to the Payroll Stand-Alone teams, to facilitate timely and accurate Payroll processing related to banking, balancing, funding and remittance of deductions, garnishments, and taxes to proper authorities, etc.
  • Supports the Payroll Transactions and Operational Support team, including acquisitions, mergers and sales of entities.
  • Supports Global payroll responsibilities, where feasible and appropriate.
  • Leverages analytical background to study defects and issues, derive root cause, and Payroll end-to-end processing.
  • Reviews applicable industry benchmarks to meet or exceed year over year.
  • Develops resolutions to complex problems that require the frequent use of creativity.
  • Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
  • Champions opportunities to simplify and standardize systems and data across the company.
  • Provides support for the annual Sarbanes Oxley audit and any related audits, as required.
  • Provides support to the Payroll systems team relating to project development testing efforts.
  • Partners with process peers in HR, Benefits, Finance, Accounting, Treasury, Legal, Labor Relations, Corporate Taxes, and related third party vendors to resolve complex/escalated employee questions/issues.
  • Provides technical guidance and support of Global payroll functions, where appropriate.

What we’re looking for...

You'll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Six or more years of relevant work experience.

Even better if you have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, or related discipline.
  • Certified Payroll Professional certification or equivalent.
  • One or more years of experience with PeopleSoft HRMS systems.
  • One or more years of experience in HRMS/Payroll Processing.
  • Excellent organization, communication, time management and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong practical knowledge of Microsoft Project and MS Office combined with the ability to create meaningful presentations to present ideas.
  • Strong experience with Payroll, with preferences for PeopleSoft Payroll and HRIS and VZ Time.
  • Experience with Payroll application table set-ups related to earning and deduction codes, and ability to develop queries/reports to support accuracy requirements.
  • Comprehensive understanding of end-to-end Payroll processing requirements.
  • In-depth understanding of year-end Payroll processing procedures and payroll rules.
  • Understanding of required compliance with legal, regulatory, and financial requirements governing functional tasks and activities.
  • Excellent project and program management skills.
  • Ability to identify, develop, monitor and report performance metrics.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once, and balance a heavy workload and competing priorities and deliverables.
