What you’ll be doing...

This position is that of a multi-faceted Sustainability Program Manager including strategic decision making, operational oversight, risk management analysis, external liaison responsibilities and employee program leadership. This position owns our relationships with multiple universities which includes setting the vision for the partnerships, developing strategic goals, coordinating events and managing projects during the year. We engage with universities in multiple ways and this person will interact with all levels of personnel including leadership as well as supervising students working on our initiatives. This position is responsible for corporate benchmarking of the competitive landscape regarding sustainability identifying opportunities for growth and innovation and making recommendations to senior leadership. This position is also the liaison with other third parties including those in which Verizon is a member. This position is responsible for setting strategic goals around facility-level adoption of sustainability initiatives and tracking the implementation of those initiatives. This position also sets the strategy for our green eating program and green cafeteria program which impacts tens of thousands of employees daily. This position works with both our vendors and cafeteria management company to determine direction for reducing the environmental impact of our food service options.

This position owns the strategy for Verizon’s sustainable paper sourcing and use policy and subsequent quarterly reporting. This position is responsible for setting new public goals that are included in our Corporate Responsibility Report. This person is also responsible for working with Verizon’s Product Development and Marketing Teams to reduce environmental impacts from packaging including setting the vision for recycled content and end of life requirements. Responsible for leading and managing Verizon’s carpooling initiative through Zimride by Enterprise which includes over 2,100 employees and availability throughout the domestic U.S. Position will also set the strategy for further commuting programs including vanpooling and public rideshare programs. This position also is responsible for participation in and leadership of Green Team events which may include Earth Day Green Expos, Earth Day remote expos, Earth Hour Awareness Events, Recycling Rallies, Green Team recruitment, and annual awards responsibilities. These events engage tens of thousands of employees annually at all levels. This person will support executive communications and internal/external messaging around their programs in mediums such as the Annual Report and Corporate Responsibility Report. This position may include supervisory responsibility for one summer fellow and/or one summer intern.

Additional Responsibilities of Position:

This position will also work to analyze potential climate change impacts to our business and recommend appropriate initiatives helping to set the strategy for the company. This position will be an advocate of sustainability throughout the company including recruiting Green Team Members and writing stories for our VzWeb newsfeed as well as participating on Green Bag sessions (webinars) with Green Team members and more. This position will play a part in developing external communications about these programs as well as providing information to our Risk & Reputation program which is responsible for responding to external (customer, industry analyst, etc.) requests for information about Sustainability overall. This position needs to have a detailed understanding of Verizon’s green energy program as well as the other external program goals. This position will also participate in Verizon’s community Recycling Rally program by traveling throughout the U.S. and annually in Verizon’s Earth Day initiatives.

What we’re looking for...

You'll need to have:

  • Bachelor's degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Six or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience in sustainability, climate change and/or environmental management.
  • Willingness to travel internationally up to 2 times per year.
  • Willingness to travel domestically 4-6 times per year.

Even better if you have:

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, sustainability or engineering.
  • MBA or MS.
  • Six or more years of project management experience.
  • Three or more years of experience in sustainability, climate change and/or environmental management.
  • Previous experience in executing climate change projects for large company.
  • Previous experience in telecommunication and wireless industry.
  • Previous experience with vendors and vendor management.
  • Proven benchmarking expertise and understanding industry implications.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams to a successful outcome.
  • Exceptional problem solving skills, issue identification, problem structuring, development of actionable recommendations.
  • Exceptional relationship building skills; ability to network independently and successfully engage support for initiatives across organizations.
  • Excellent financial and analytical skills.
  • Excellent Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel skills.
  • Excellent executive communication skills, both written and verbal.
