What you’ll be doing...

The Global Technology Solutions (GTS) Strategic Engagement team is looking for a proactive, knowledgeable project manager who has experience with the U.S patent process and significant experience leading, developing and driving programs. This role is responsible for a diverse set of responsibilities, such as providing guidance and support to all GTS employees globally for identifying potentially patentable subject matter; collaborating across functional teams to produce high quality invention disclosure documents; and working with internal and external counsel to meet target filing dates for patent applications to protect GTS’ Intellectual Property.

This role will build the GTS Patent Portfolio by adhering to processes, inspiring employees to keep innovating, effectively managing each invention as a project, and by championing the importance of obtaining patent protection on all of GTS’ key strategic technologies.

You will be successful in this role if you are able to:

  • Quickly self-educate on complex, emerging technologies.
  • Identify potentially, patentable subject matter.
  • Effectively communicate with inventors that have a wide range of technology backgrounds.
  • Produce high quality invention disclosure document that present the technical and operation details necessary for patenting consideration.
  • Manage the intake of all GTS invention disclosures, each as a separate project.
  • Conduct patent brainstorming sessions for innovative projects that demonstrate new concepts with potential for multiple patents.
  • Identify areas of duplication in regards to submitted subject matter within the GTS patent portfolio and previously filed patent applications.
  • Recommend continuations to previous filed patent applications; review patent claims, amendments as necessary.
  • Collaborate with the business and legal teams to prioritize and manage IP issues.
  • Establish effective working relationships with internal Legal and external law firm personnel to create, foster and manager IP team.
  • Liaise between GTS inventors, Legal and outside counsel to ensure inventors provide timely, adequate and complete responses to outside counsel inquiries during patent application draft process.
  • Manage the patent application draft process with inventor(s), VZ Legal & outside counsel to meet target filing dates in compliance with U.S. Patent law and business objectives.
  • Advocate for inventors and mediate in situation where invention disclosures are declined for patent application filing.

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Six or more years of relevant work experience.

Even better if you have:

  • A degree in Computer Science/Information Systems, or Business Administration.
  • Strong technical and project management experience.
  • Knowledge of U.S. Patent Law and regulations pertaining to U.S.filing procedures.
  • Strong technical knowledge of GTS systems/applications.
  • Ability to translate complex ideas and express them in concise ways.
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing, communication and organizational skills.
  • Proven track record of interfacing with senior executives for two-way feedback on program objectives and results.
  • Ability to identify “patent pockets” for invention disclosure.
