What you’ll be doing...

Verizon is seeking an experienced, talented attorney to join its Intellectual Property – Patent Prosecution and Asset Development team. The ideal candidate will have significant legal experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications in the telecommunications, computer science and electrical engineering disciplines, as well as experience in advising clients regarding patent matters, licensing, and enforcement/defense of patent rights in these technology areas. Successful candidates will have demonstrated good legal and commercial judgment and significant experience working with development teams, business leaders and legal department colleagues to clearly communicate advice regarding patent issues and achieve overall positive outcomes for the business.

  • Communicating with development teams to provide patenting advice, identify inventive activities and solicit disclosure of patentable subject matter. Understanding development activities and technology roadmaps of business units, and impacts of those activities/plans to patenting strategy.
  • Reviewing invention disclosure submissions and participating in patent filing decision processes.
  • Preparing patent applications and prosecution filings for the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and review of outside counsel prosecution work product. Managing docket of pending applications for efficient prosecution to commercially useful patents.
  • Collaborating with legal department colleagues to assist with technology and patent-related matters and identify possible legal issues/risks raised by technology and product development activities.
  • Identifying and advising on intellectual property issues associated with software and hardware development, including IP ownership, open source, joint and independent development, client training and risk mitigation.

What we’re looking for...

You'll need to have:

  • JD degree and six or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Bar membership and needed licenses.
  • Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Even better if you have:

  • B.S. in electrical, computer or software engineering, computer science, or other engineering/science degree relevant to telecommunications technologies.
  • Six or more years of experience performing patent prosecution activities, either in-house or in private practice, in the areas of telecommunications, computer science, electrical engineering or closely related technical disciplines.
  • Experience with both United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) activities and communicating with clients regarding patenting issues.
  • Experience related to defense, enforcement, and licensing of patent rights.
