What you’ll be doing...

The Director of Technology Innovation and Strategic Partnerships responsible for creating value for Verizon Consumer GTS (Global Technology Solutions) team. The Director of Innovation does this by intersecting business needs with emerging technologies and leading the definition of compelling solutions that accelerate the adoption of digital products and industry capabilities. This role leads in the identifying new technology trends, reviewing start-ups, prototyping solutions and promotion of a technology vision and roadmap that maximizes the GTS value creation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify opportunities to innovate across Consumer business, and develop investment themes by leveraging internal and external insights from industry experts, accelerators, etc.
  • Act as a thought partner to the business by supporting Consumer business leaders’ technology innovation
  • Counsel business leaders on leveraging new technologies to address product gaps and opportunities
  • Develop strategy on how Consumer business will lead innovation and contribute to the open source world
  • Build and maintain strong relationships across the organization to exchange best practice, innovation, creativity and ensure continuous improvement
  • Understand startup ecosystem and make recommendations on best way of leveraging startups through partnerships, investment, and/or acquisitions
  • Develop network of industry contacts (e.g., SMB executives, academia, technology thought leaders, and investment banking/advisory executives) to increase Verizon’s ability to uncover partnerships and investment opportunities
  • Champion innovation projects (e.g., partnerships with fast growth companies) with cross-functional stakeholders to strengthen Verizon’s innovation capabilities
  • Develop value proposition, KPIs, and execution plan for partnering with fast growth companiesin product development, including approach to identify and evaluate potential partners

Technology Vision, Prototype & Solutions

  • Develop and communicate a clear consumer technology strategy and roadmap, including development of the annual business case, with input from GTS partners and stakeholders to ensure that it meets the needs of technology teams and business partners and supports the organization’s business plan.
  • Create impactful proofs of concept (e.g., prototypes, small scale commercial collaborations) and develop actionable plans to scale
  • Align and coordinate technology roadmaps/portfolios with relevant organization and business partners, evaluating potential opportunities and threats from other disruptive competitors.
  • Serve as consumer GTS principal technology subject matter expert, providing strategic and tactical direction to other GTS teams as well as business partners.
  • Cultivate relationships with external subject matter experts and partners from industry, academia and government
  • Coordinate the GTS Technology Advisory Forum (TAF; comprised of subject matter experts from among our industry, academic and government partners).
  • Establish and oversee a set of subject specific agile tech teams, comprised of external domain experts who GTS can leverage to expand our scope of relevant technical domain expertise, pressure test TAF recommendations, and advise on future direction.

Product Delivery, Portfolio Strategy & Value Creation

  • Develop a strategic framework for other portfolio composition (i.e., technology thrust, project type/duration, technology readiness/risk, etc.) and management.
  • Work with the Senior leader of Projects and Engineering to support the implementation plan for the business case, including project development and partner team curation.
  • Collaborate with GTS technical resources (Project Innovation Engineers, Future strategy team, and development team) to cause all activities to contribute to valuable projects with deployable outcomes.
  • Support project evaluation activities, ensuring clear value propositions for each project and regular assessment of project deliverables and impact potential.
  • Identify emerging technology solutions from among project portfolio, partner portfolio, and technology community to aid members in deploying the group prototype outcomes – establish success criteria for POC
  • Help GTS shift its competencies from traditional project management or delivery teams to that of value-added partner, who can advise on technology trends and insights.
  • Create and evaluate the high-level business case for each project, including plans for adoption. Disseminate impact case studies.
  • Identify valuable project outcomes and work with project innovation engineers and external communications team members to articulate these benefits to others.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert, representing the organization externally, including conferences and partner presentations, and engaging a broad set of stakeholders.

What we’re looking for...

  • 10+ years in technology leadership position
  • 5+ years in startup, technology development, technical strategy, or innovation role
  • Be a driving force on innovation across organization
  • Establish partnerships with different GTS and business group to help accelerate the technology adoption and innovation
  • Identify opportunities in the market and take the ideas from conceptualization of innovation to delivery
  • Experience in the Telecom industry preferred
  • Experience of innovation to life, from idea / concept to implementation in a startup is a plus
  • Able to balance needs of multiple stakeholders from different functions. Exceptional analytical and strategic thinker
  • Able to maintain and develop business and vendor relationships
  • Willing to disagree with and challenge peers
  • Ability to continually identify and execute on improvement opportunities
  • Clear understanding of how partnerships works
  • Deep knowledge of emerging technologies (AI/ML, AR/VR, blockchain, robotics, IoT, etc.)
  • Strong operational knowledge and experience across key business areas
  • Ability to build networks/relationships, especially with technical founders, and business partners
  • Collaboration with GTS and Business stakeholders
  • Thought leadership
  • Exceptional planning, coordination, and execution skills. Ability to negotiate, influence, manage and drive action
