What you’ll be doing...

The Inside Plant Engineer position is responsible for planning and designing a network connecting wire centers in specific local areas in a particular state. The Engineer will mostly design at the physical layer of the 7 layer OSI model. At this level, the Engineer is expected to use the latest Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) technology on an expansive fiber network. The network designed using the latest equipment and on the fiber plant will support Verizon’s customers’ video, data and voice services consistent with established tariff and other rules of engagement. Collaboration with various Operations’ teams, the Engineer is also responsible for maintaining and striving to improve the reliability of such network. The Engineer is expected to be apprised of the technological advancement in the telecom sector, and be promoters in driving change from a legacy network, which consist of mostly SONET, DS3, DS1 and other circuits that make up the North American Digital Hierarchy (NADH) to the Next Generation platform consisting of predominately Optical Transport Networking (OTN) and Ethernet (data) circuits. The Engineer should be aware of the OSMINE process and Verizon’s desire to move to newer and better systems.

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Four or more years of relevant work experience.

Even better if you have:

  • A degree in Engineering or relevant field.
  • Experience in the Telecommunications industry.
  • Engineering, Planning, and/or Operations knowledge, especially with Local and Long-Haul Telecommunications networks.
  • Ability to make network design decisions based on recommended Engineering Guidelines and design criteria.
  • Technical or project management experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Strong knowledge of PC and software applications including Windows and MS Office.
  • Organizational, interpersonal, negotiation, people development and operational skills.
