What you’ll be doing...

The Verizon IT Datacenter Virtualization Team is seeking a Systems Engineer to join our team. The System Engineer is responsible for supporting the day-to-day server virtualization services, along with planning, implementing, and continuously improving virtualization infrastructure offerings. The System Engineer supports VMWare based technologies in the enterprise and works with Networking, Storage, and the Project Management teams to implement solutions for our business partners. The Systems Engineer is accountable for significantly contributing to the stability, resiliency, and general health related to the virtualization infrastructure; is a reliable technical contributor with knowledge and experience in the area of server, application, administration, and related hardware/software. The candidate is responsible for solving problems of diverse scope where analysis of situations requires evaluation and judgment. The ideal candidate should have an excellent understanding of virtualization and related technologies (storage, networking, Linux, Windows and appliances). Candidate should have a proven track record of deployments of new technologies (virtual) as they become available, as well as the ability to manage difficult projects, working through roadblocks, and driving cross-functional teams to meet target deliverables.

Primary Job Functions:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day support of ESXi host servers and multi-site vCenter infrastructure.
  • Participating in disaster recovery tests and planning.
  • Support operations of multi-site (geographically) infrastructure.
  • Monitoring and providing break/fix support to virtual host across the enterprise.
  • Performing routine audits of systems and software.
  • Working with Network and Storage Administration to plan, install and configure new ESXi host servers.
  • Answering technical queries from other IT support teams (DBAs, Networking, and Architecture).
  • Responsibility for documenting the configuration of the current and future infrastructures.
  • Troubleshooting any reported problems.
  • Multi-site System performance tuning.
  • Responding and resolving service outages and interruptions.
  • Contributes to design of enterprise virtual systems including but not limited to technical architecture, stability, and platforms.
  • The assessment and optimization of the virtualization systems, through systems monitoring, statistics, daily health checks. Responsible for reporting KPIs and trends all facets of the environment. Coordinates service calls and schedules appointments with software vendors and consultants to ensure satisfactory resolutions of problems and malfunctions.
  • Maintains accurate and comprehensive documentation diagrams of the enterprise virtual infrastructure and communications flow and routing.
  • Identify trends and abnormalities and pro-actively take steps to prevent performance impacts on virtual environment and business functions.
  • Perform pro-active support functions and reporting to maintain the integrity of the enterprise virtual environment and business function.
  • Communicate accurately and useful status reports to management on a timely basis
  • Identify and initiate continuous improvements.

  • Effectively communicate with customers.
  • Forecast and recommend infrastructure and system application improvements.

  • Work with ticket queue to track support issues.
  • Willingness and availability to provide after-hours support.
  • Willingness and availability for on-call support.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Four or more years of relevant work experience.

Even better if you have:

  • A degree in Information Technology or Computer Science degree.
  • Six or more years of experience with Windows/Linux or VMWare or combination of experience in any of the three technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of Enterprise Architecture and its supporting processes and tools.
  • Strong knowledge of X86 based technologies.
  • Knowledge of solutions such as server virtualization, high-availability clustering, and system design.
  • Experience in the implementation of cross-domain solutions.
  • Knowledge of Linux (RHEL/CentOS) and MS Windows Server (2008 R2/2012R2/2016).
  • Knowledge of underlying storage for VMs and storage network protocols such as NFS and CIFS.
  • Knowledge of core communication protocols such as TCP/IP, UDP, SSL, HTP/S.
  • Experience working with performance analysis and optimization.
  • Knowledge of proactive monitoring concepts.
  • Ability to apply sound troubleshooting methodology in order to isolate and resolve the root cause of reported issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to reach all levels of management and the customer base.
  • Willingness to travel as required.
