What you’ll be doing...

The Network Security Design team within Verizon Global Network Management is seeking a Network Security Design Engineer to ensure the operational security of next-generation Verizon networks supporting exciting new products like 5G. Verizon Network Security has responsibility for our network elements, servers and services that support them, and the management networks used to operate them. Work across the Network Security organization touches on multiple disciplines including cybersecurity, large-scale networking, software engineering, and data analytics. The Network Security Design team is responsible for ensuring infrastructure designs integrate Verizon's operational security model, identifying and resolving process gaps, and consulting as subject matter experts.

  • Assessing whether new network projects have a security impact and determining which teams need to be involved.
  • Validating that the correct data is sent to security when network elements are installed and new element configuration is implemented.
  • Ensuring data collected from the network is appropriately classified and analyzed in the security collection infrastructure.
  • Assisting in troubleshooting firewalls and other network controls.
  • Identifying and evaluating new technologies for use within the security operations team.
  • Presenting technical issues, potential solutions, and recommendations to other security team members.

What we’re looking for...

You'll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Four or more years of relevant work experience.

Even better if you have:

  • Protocol level understanding of IP traffic: UDP, TCP, ICMP and fundamental higher-layer protocols like DNS and HTTP.
  • Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Network Security certifications such as CISSP.
  • Experience searching and building reporting using Splunk or ElasticSearch/Logstash/Kibana.
  • Fundamental automation skills: Python or similar language experience, use of version-control systems like GIT.
  • Experience using Linux/UNIX environments.
  • Data analytics skills (i.e. with Splunk machine learning toolkit).
  • Experience with automation tools such as Ansible, Chef, or Puppet.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time.
