The Systems Team within Verizon Connect is responsible for automating, designing and operating our software infrastructure to provide a highly available, scalable hosting infrastructure with high performance. We are looking for an Engineer who is proficient in all aspects of automation, system administration and engineering to support and maintain global infrastructure services in our company. We own back-end systems that are used by all Verizon Connect applications with technologies based in: Linux, Windows Server, Terraform, saltstack and (future) Ansible automation, SQL and No-SQL databases, Docker and AWS Web Services.
You will be responsible for supporting highly available systems for all Verizon Connect applications. This includes monitoring & remediation, maintenance, incident response, and scaling. You must be comfortable taking initiative, operating at a global scale, and working across teams in an agile environment. You should be somebody who enjoys working on solving problems, a quick learner who is customer- centric, and feels strongly not only about engineering and operations but also about running systems and software in the real world. You must enjoy a close-knit team environment of shared responsibility. The ideal candidate will have strong distributed systems and Unix/Linux design, Amazon Web Services administration and implementation experience. Our engineers are level-headed, top-notch performers who demonstrate composure, love working as a team, and proactively take the lead whenever necessary.
We have an immediate need for a Systems Engineer to join our Development Operations team. This role will help facilitate the deployment maintenance and performance tuning of our award winning SaaS application.
Responsibilities:

  • Run and maintain a 24x7 Internet-oriented production environment, across multiple geographic regions, hundreds of instances.
  • Demonstrate expertise around specifying, designing, and/or implementing system health, performance monitoring tools, and software management tools
  • Tackle the challenges surrounding efficient operations and failure mode analysis in large complex distributed systems.
  • Through participation in all phases of the development of a large distributed system, provide manageability, operability and performance perspectives on all aspects of Service Catalog and potentially its dependencies.
  • In working closely with the Solution Architect, propose design considerations, balancing raw up-front dollar cost with operability and TCO, from the infrastructure layer and up specify and participate in the development and delivery of operability-related features such as system health monitoring, diagnostics, repair, and other self-healing automation.
  • Adapt and improve operations management systems and processes to accommodate rapid and increasing growth in systems and traffic..
  • Perform various system maintenance tasks (your hands get dirty here), including configuration of new services and instances.
  • Manage directly assigned tasks and on-call duties gracefully.
  • Monitor the health of the fleet, automating system health, maintenance tasks, and reporting systems as needed.
  • Administer systems in Amazon Web Services

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field or four or more years of work experience.
  • Four or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Four or more years of systems administration experience with Linux
  • Experience with build and management of Windows servers running IIS
  • Redhat/CentOS Linux
  • AWS or other cloud-based architecture support

Even better if you have:

  • A degree.
  • Ability to operate in high pressure environment and successfully handle multiple priorities.
  • Experience deploying or managing large scale distributed environments in AWS
  • Experience in a high paced startup-like environment
  • Terraform, saltstack, Ansible or other automation platforms
  • Scripting experience preferably python, bash or powershell
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP networking, IPSec VPN and IPTables.
  • LDAP administration
  • AWS certification.
  • SQL or No-SQL Database server administration
  • Dynatrace or other application metric platform
  • Docker or other container-based implementation
  • Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills
  • Experience in a critical 24x7 production service environment.
  • Self-motivated team player
  • Ability and desire to learn new skills and technologies
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills
