What you’ll be doing...

The Access Network Design Specialist is responsible for the design and deployment of fiber optic networks. They collaborate closely with a team of highly skilled engineers who influence network integrity and reinforce our brand as "the most reliable". The specialist will lead capital investments and aim to discover new methods of expanding the reach of our access network. As specialists, they assess opportunity by considering parameters, weighing potential risks, and navigating through complex challenges. They engage end users at first hand and are empowered to make decisions that directly impact the customer's experience. The specialist maintains a business conscious mindset and leverages supplier, vendor, and partnership contracts to execute on commitments.

Key functions of the specialist include:

  • Compiling and analyzing data as well as capturing ground intelligence
  • Proposing the best options for a detailed engineering design
  • Adhering plans to national code, federal/state regulations including local ordinances
  • Creativity and critical thinking in devising models that allow us to drive network advancement and evolution at scale
  • Comfortable deciphering complex problems, establishing consensus amongst peers and practical experience in negotiation
  • Actively work to become familiar and compare the latest network approved products from various suppliers

As the lead, the specialist works closely with our field operation forces to carry out network builds and provide a plan of action during network outages. They ensure financial accountability with the addition of every new asset and utilize their subject matter expertise to help IT development teams refine internal applications to improve operational effectiveness. The engineering specialist is a network professional who lives and breathes access connectivity.

What you'll be doing...

You'll be directly involved with the design of existing and next generation passive optical network (PON) to advance FiOS Gigabit services. You'll be tasked to drive speed to market initiatives and be required to balance cost to build targets. You'll design fiber to residential customers as well as businesses and tackle designs in the multi-dwelling environment where you'll encounter increased challenges from intra-building design constraints and aesthetic requirements. You will engineer multi-use capability of our fiber based platform and target end to end switched Ethernet services for small and medium businesses with GPON technology. You will gain the opportunity to learn and understand the advantages of the up and coming NGPON2 architecture. You'll design dark fiber to meet customer specified dB requirements that will service as front haul and continue advancement of LTE as well as accommodate the transition to C-RAN for all wireless carriers. You will challenged to respond immediately to shortages in capacity related to fiber, distribution components and other network transport elements. Most importantly you will oversee the main infrastructure that enables the propagation of our network and serves as the foundation for the future.

You'll need to have:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a similar field of study, or two or more years of work experience
  • Two or more years of relevant work experience

Even better if you have:

  • Degree in Computer/Data Science or technical/mathematics fields
  • Experience with Windows based programs and corporate database systems
  • Financial management experience with budgeting and accounting
  • Prior design knowledge of fiber optic technology and network equipment
  • Proficiency with OneNote, Acrobat, Excel Advanced Functions
  • Basic programming - C, Visual Basic, etc
  • Knowledge of Agile and DevOps concepts
  • Familiarity with Lean Six Sigma principles
  • Prior experience of interfacing with customers at first hand
  • Knowledge of geospatial software and data analytics
  • Experience with CAD, MapInfo, Minitab
