What you’ll be doing...

The Verizon Technology and Product Development (TPD) team is currently working to transform to an Application Programming Interface (API)-first model. As such, the team is looking for an Associate Fellow who is a subject matter expert in API to drive products in various stages of the journey, including monolithic, API-last and API-first approaches. This Associate Fellow provides the API core team with guidance to enable this transformation and is responsible for setting the overall standards for Verizon’s TPD API program. Additionally, this role acts as the go-to person and subject matter expert for Technology product managers, architects, developers and other development teams for technical API related questions.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Creating a design methodology to help business and technology classify capabilities across the organization—security, video, cloud, etc. for Domain Classification.
  • Creating the Design/Architectural standards that define guidelines, service design principles, and patterns to build robust, reliable, and secure services that expose stable, well-documented and easy to use service contracts (aka APIs) to its customers.
  • Creating a governance chapter across the company to include e/vangelize standards and ensuring adherence across the development and product teams by running monthly charters.
  • Identifying common specifications for vendors to use for API building while ensuring standardization across TPD vendors and expand to Global Network & Technology vendors.
  • Acting as subject matter expert for different design guides including Transport protocols (HTTP etc.); API protocol (REST, GraphQL, Events, etc.); service runtime libraries; reliability, observability, security, data privacy.
  • Identifying tools to automate governance and help with publishing conformance to API-first (documentation to quality of APIs).
  • Representing Verizon at various standard bodies such as TMForum and GSMA to provide Verizon’s view and help create technical alliances.
  • Providing end-to-end architecture for publishing APIs including tools.
  • Working with Technology product managers to contribute towards standards, guidelines, style guides etc. These standards define every aspect of API design, styling, API protocol semantics, API versioning, various communication patterns and API security.

Where you’ll be working:

This hybrid role will have a defined work location that includes work from home and assigned office days as set by the manager.

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Six or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Willingness to travel 25% or less of the time.

Even better if you have one or more of the following:

  • Influenced enterprise-wide chapters for API or enterprise architecture conformity across organization
  • Master’s degree or Doctorate in engineering, computer science and/or telecommunications.
  • Experience managing large cross-functional or enterprise-wide projects.
  • Previous enterprise and backend architecture experience.
  • Strong experience working on mobile technologies/applications.
  • Strong experience in developing and architecting enterprise applications.
  • Strong experience in launching and building API and API programs.
