What you’ll be doing...

The Verizon Business Group (VBG) Competitive Intelligence Strategy team combines industry expertise, finance, research and analytical skills in order to help project the future actions of competitors and determine how to gain or maintain dominance in the Telecommunications industry.

The team is responsible for helping VBG sales, product, marketing and strategy leadership make effective decisions on future actions. We do this by gathering relevant data to determine the likely course of action that leadership will take. Our team will ensure Verizon’s key decision makers have an insight advantage by reading market signals, aiding all aspects of business development and strategic planning.

The Competitive Intelligence Manger will work with senior leaders and product experts across the organization to assess developments in their competitive environments, thereby helping to accelerate the company’s overall growth agenda. The role will provide insight and expertise to help inform our strategic planning process – with emphasis on evaluating external market trends, macroeconomic factors, regulatory developments, and the competitive landscape.

Interpretation of industry publications, trade show materials, equity and market research will be a daily function. Expect to discuss your POV on using media monitoring tools to track online mentions, and competitive activities.

Your ability to thoroughly analyze competitors’ financial and economic models over time – clearly linking this to their over-arching strategies and near-term tactical moves – is an essential complement to our businesses’ day-to-day understanding of their competitors’ market position.

Serve as a central contributor in a high-profile team that serves as Verizon senior leadership’s trusted advisor on clarifying competitors’ evolving position within markets and the implications for our businesses.

Responsibilities include:

  • Perform in-depth analyses (e.g., market sizing, competitive landscape mapping, channel assessment, segmentation, financial performance) using quantitative and qualitative methods to generate business insights.
  • Identify, gather, and assess key internal and external data to drive those analyses – leveraging and accessing research sources (internal and external to the company).
  • Develop innovative analytical methodologies to answer strategic business questions across the organization
  • Collaborate closely with global and regional stakeholders across Verizon Business Group –product, sales, technology, finance, etc. – to identify and interpret signals in the marketplace we need to recognize and leverage as competitive advantage.
  • Work closely with the team managers to develop and follow project roadmaps, including key activities, stakeholder engagement, and milestones
  • Proactively review emerging trends in markets, case studies and relevant topics.
  • Develop recommendations to support growth and business improvement that will have a significant impact on Verizon’s top and bottom lines, long-term.
  • Contribute to annual strategic planning process with innovative and strategic ideas to help shape a relatively new team, and continue to drive impact across the organization
  • Build long-term internal relationships and manage organizational stakeholders.
  • Possess personal presence, comfort, and confidence to appropriately engage with executives.
  • Engage and team with external consulting firms as and when needed.

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have…

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Six or more years of relevant work experience.

Even better if you have…

  • A Master’s degree or MBA
  • Telecommunications, Technology, or related B2B industry experience.
  • Six or more years functional experience in a financial/business analyst, market intelligence or a strategic planning role with an enterprise-sized organization.
  • Investment Banking (e.g., M&A, equities research), Financial Research, or Financial Advisory experience a must, with very strong earnings statement analysis, financial modeling/valuation and analytical skills. Quantitative and financial modeling using balance sheet, income statement, public and transaction comps analyses a plus.
  • Experience in media monitoring, including hands-on work with tools such as Mention, Buzz Bundle, Google Alerts or similar online search query tools highly valued.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with specific ability to communicate concepts and ideas concisely and defend their validity.
  • Ability to comfortably interact with business stakeholders (management and senior executives) in a professional and mature manner.
  • Excellent technology skills with strong Excel (macros, pivot tables, look-ups and filtering), PowerPoint, and Word skills. S/he will be able to quickly learn new software applications.
  • Strong intellectual curiosity.
  • Energetic, decisive, creative, organized.
  • Ability to multitask across several concurrent projects.
  • Comfort in and commitment to strong teamwork environment. A relationship builder, who can establish trust and credibility across Experian.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as necessary.
