What you’ll be doing...

The Counsel position is a key partner in helping Verizon secure, defend, grow, and comply with revenue-generating contracts with state and local government and education customers. The Counsel – Public Sector will join a team of attorneys providing legal support for all aspects of Verizon’s business with public sector customers. The successful candidate will join a team of experienced attorneys specializing in public procurement law and complex agreements for the sale of telecom services and emerging technology. In this role, the Counsel will be expected to interact regularly and effectively with senior management and customers. The Counsel must be creative, strategic, and innovative while handling a high volume of matters and focused on bringing those matters to a timely conclusion.

The Counsel will have the following responsibilities:

  • Providing cradle-to-grave legal advice and support for state and local government customers, including proposal review, contract negotiation, interpretation, and closeout.
  • Supporting the offer of new products on master supply agreements and direct contracts.
  • Monitoring and helping ensure compliance with the procurement, disclosure, and ethical requirements associated with doing business with government entities.
  • Assessing the viability, draft, and direct pre-bid and post-award protests.
  • Advising on a range of legal, regulatory, privacy, and compliance issues, including information security, procurement integrity, conflicts of interest, gifts/gratuities, and other issues that arise in the public procurement setting.
  • Performing all of these duties with accountability and a high sense of urgency.

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

  • JD degree and six or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Bar membership and needed licenses.
  • Experience in public procurement law at the federal and/or state/local level.
  • Willingness to travel.

Even better if you have:

  • Excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
  • Experience negotiating and managing complex agreements with significant budgets.
  • Strong relationship building, influencing, and negotiation skills.
  • The ability to implement and support continuous improvement programs.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and demonstrated ability to close matters in an ethical, urgent, and timely manner.
