What you’ll be doing...

You will support and maintain an effective overall controls environment for Global Payroll, ensuring the systems and practices are compliant with country, federal, state and local tax laws as well as Verizon Policy.

You will conduct evaluations of processes and policies in the area Payroll tax to identify opportunities for 1) validating and enforcing tax compliance; 2) strengthening tax internal controls; 3) streamlining tax processes and 4) providing training to the Payroll tax team. You will handle the setups, testing, and tax filings for all Mergers & Acquisitions.

While working with the Global Payroll Transactional Auditors and Global Payroll Sr. Trainers, you will enforce and sustain accuracy by reviewing and updating training curriculum and compliance documentation. Additionally, you will partner and collaborate with internal and external auditors to assist with data inquiries and remediation where applicable.

  • Work independently to perform standard audit procedures, identify opportunities, develop plans to remediate deficiencies, and monitor performance against those actions.
  • Develop a schedule to perform repeatable process reviews to evaluate current business practices and ensure internal control structures follow wage and pay practices, federal, state, and local taxation and Verizon Data policies.
  • Work with the Payroll Tax Manager to implement necessary changes to enforce compliance.
  • Perform annual system reviews in PeopleSoft as well as applicable third party systems. Identify discrepancies and assist with remediation recommendations.
  • Assist with any compliance issues raised or identified through to remediation.
  • Determine quarterly checks to validate country, federal, state and local tax requirements are in compliance for employees who live and/or work in multiple states, including employees on alternative work arrangements or emergency work arrangements.
  • Act as a liaison between the Global Payroll Controls team, Transactional Auditors, and Internal and External Audit, and work with process owners to establish action plans to address issues.
  • Follow up to ensure completion of all actions and report appropriate metrics to management, including development of training curriculum to support and enforce compliance.
  • Evaluate upcoming changes to domestic or international regulations or policies and identify changes required to applicable Global Payroll Processes or system functionality.
  • Perform data analysis to support process improvements and behavior changes leading to a more effective control environment.
  • Utilize data management tools in support of Continuous Controls Monitoring.
  • Identify sets of data for review and establish queries to focus on anomalies.
  • Exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action, and work on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations requires a review of identifiable factors.
  • Cooperatively interact with various Global Payroll teams, and internal or external stakeholders to perform checks and achieve goals to track and enforce compliance.
  • Provide assistance in developing process documentation and/or training material.

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor's degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Four or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience in continuous improvement initiatives, and root cause analysis.
  • Knowledge of audit and payroll practices, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Local tax requirements, as well as Wage and Payroll practices.

Even better if you have:

  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Ability to manage large work volumes, show flexibility, and adapt easily to change.
  • Experience working in a team environment and an ability to work with numerous different groups throughout a complex organization.
  • Ability to successfully prioritize work, focus on achieving results, proactive with an attention to detail, and a strong sense of urgency.
  • A self-starter mentality with the ability to work independently and across organizational lines.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Economics.
  • Effective critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively across various levels in the organization.
  • Good quantitative and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of accounting systems and applications, including PeopleSoft, Infor Time System, and FLSA processing.
  • Professional CPP or FPC certification, or in the process of achieving certifications.
  • Project management experience.
  • Strong financial acumen.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
