The Director of Data Management & Protection is a critical member of the Corporate Information Security (CIS) organization, focused on delivering a transformational program to modernize the cyber data infrastructure and analytics capabilities as well as data collection and protection services. We collect, store, and analyze data generated across the Verizon enterprise to detect and respond to cyber threats. The Director is responsible for the overall management of the cyber security big data infrastructure, tools and technologies, architecture, strategy, and integration required to support and enable the analytical needs of the Cyber Security organization.
This leader will partner closely with the Chief Data Officer (CDO) organization, including the Vice President of Data Governance and other members of the data community, to ensure that data protection requirements, use cases, and policies are understood. The Director will both lead and participate in strategic planning for the data analytic domains and maintain an ongoing information security data management and protection roadmap in order to leverage all data resources to provide end-to-end cyber visibility.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities;
Enterprise Engagement
Engage and coordinate data protection requirements with senior business stakeholders:
- CISO
- Chief Data Officer
- Privacy
- Legal
- Compliance
- Network, IT leadership, architects
- Business Process Owners
External Engagement Support
- Support Verizon engagements with Data Protection Authorities as needed (such as EU GDPR / California CCPA & CPRA).
Data Strategy & Lifecycle Management
- Drive the scope, establishment and execution of the roadmap and vision to transform and modernize information delivery and management; including the CIS data platforms, big data, insights & analytics and data management
- Support data-informed decision-making, throughout the Corporate Information Security (CIS) organization
- Ensure Corporate Information Security (CIS) cloud and on-premise data respositories are centralized into a directional data lake and modeled to support data analysis requirements from all CIS functional groups.
- Drive technology strategy, balancing short term and long term needs to ensure that the architecture can scale and evolve accordingly
- Work with CIS, IT and executive management to guide and maintain a holistic vision of the CIS data strategy, and help leadership plan for any changes in our data strategy or needs.
- Stay abreast of privacy developments and best practices and adjusts CIS data strategies and program designs accordingly
Data Protection
- Maintain an understanding of Verizon's mission and core operations, specifically its processing operations, information systems, and associated data security and data protection requirements.
- Partner with CDO and stakeholder organizations to establish and govern Crown Jewels asset program
- Define and enforce a data lifecycle strategy for CIS managed data
- In partnership with Security Architecture and Engineering functions - Maintain a data protection framework designed to adequately understand and mitigate risks to unauthorized access and exposure of Verizon data; this would include identifying data protection capabilities and solutions.
- Align data protection standards with Verizon data governance and usage policies.
- Work across different lines of Business (e.g. Platform, Network and IT) to ensure consistent data protection in line with collected purpose and data classification.
Data Architecture & Ingestion
- Create a common data framework so that all CIS data can be analyzed in a unified manner.
- Ensure that all transactional systems can communicate with the data warehouse and that data adheres to a unified data model.
- Collaborate with all functions of CIS organization and business stakeholders to ensure data needs are addressed and the required data is modeled and available to analysts and end-users.
- Create and execute a plan to develop and mature ability to measure and optimize data usage growth and cost
- Drive Splunk architecture and ingestion strategy, standards and cost optimization
- Document CIS cyber data rention standards in conjunction with peer requirments
Data Analytics & Reporting
- Accountable for the overall management of CIS analytic capabilities and functions.
- Harness data driven machine-learning and artificial intelligence and other analytical techniques to offer actionable cyber insights.
- Develop a roadmap for the CIS data and analytics function that clearly defines ownership and responsibility between the central data function and the functional groups.
- Build a multi-modal service model that meets the needs of CIS functional groups: Full-service to Self-Service across the CIS data stack.
- Provide analytical support for delivering cyber use cases by applying analytical and machine learning techniques.
What we’re looking for...
- 10+ years people management with a proven track record of building, training, and developing a high-performing team; ability to lead and motivate an organization of technology professions to achieve tactical and strategic goals
- Minimum of 5+ years experience in a senior leadership position managing an analytics team including architects, engineers and operations professionals
- Bachelor’s degree in Cyber Security, Security Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science, or equivalent work experience; Master’s Degree in a technical discipline is preferred
- Strategic leader and builder of both vision and bridges, and able to energize the appropriate teams in the organization; proven leadership in advanced information systems combined with broad business acumen
- Extensive exposure and experience with communicating and presenting to executive stakeholders including engineering, legal and C-suites.
- Have an in-depth understanding of GDPR, CCPA and other data protection or compliance requirements
- Demonstrated knowledge of Data Science Techniques
- Experience effectively prioritizing work, juggling competing priorities and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Experience with: Python, SQL, relational databases, Splunk, Tableau and public cloud
- Must have experience with analytic and data visualization tools
- Established experience delivering information management solutions to end users
- Demonstrated understanding of enterprise data warehouse, big data, BI & analytics, content management and data management
- Strong technical data science domain know-how to coach and grow the team
- Effectively challenge the status quo and plan insightful roadmaps
- Experience in a complex, cross-functional organization where your teams need to collaborate and integrate with other teams across many disciplines
