What you’ll be doing...

This position in the Centralized Service Performance Organization will be responsible for understanding, optimizing, and consistently maintaining the performance of various network elements. This includes ensuring an excellent user experience for Verizon customers with a focus around the LTE Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and the 5G standalone core. This will be accomplished by routinely monitoring key network performance indicators, researching ways to improve throughput, optimizing signaling and user plane performance, and identifying/eliminating packet loss, high latency, jitter, and other performance degrading issues. This position will be responsible for performing advanced technical analysis, generating routine and ad-hoc reports on network health, working with other groups at various levels to improve the customer experience, and communicating important performance information for new products and services to the field teams.

  • Validating the network performance after system configuration changes and new feature deployments to ensure a high level of network performance quality and reliability.
  • Ensuring the accuracy of the KPIs that are monitored and overseeing the creation of new network KPIs from the various hardware, software, and tool vendors.
  • Driving improvement to the customer experience as measured by internal KPIs and 3rd party benchmarks.
  • Ensuring alignment between performance improvement recommendations/directives and the impact to the business and company financials.
  • Establishing strong partnerships and ensuring network performance improvements are aligned with the business objectives of other groups within Verizon such as Network Planning, Maintenance Engineering, and Technology Development.
  • Communicating to leadership and other organizations how the customer experience is affected by problems and changes with the Evolved Packet Core (EPC), 5G Core, and IP networks.
  • Evaluating new applications, tools, and software to create new and automated ways to monitor and identify performance impacting network anomalies.
  • Performing advanced troubleshooting and driving network, customer, and call flow related problems to resolution with various internal teams and the network infrastructure vendors.

**This position can be located out of any US based Verizon Hub location. **

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Six or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Willingness to travel.

Even better if you have:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical Engineering or other related field.
  • Experience in the IP networking or data communications industry or an equivalent degree in IP networking topics.
  • Experience in system analysis for LTE and 5G 3GPP standards with an understanding of wireless 5G Core/EPC vendors, and Verizon end-to-end network architecture, KPIs, and system parameters.
  • Experience in analyzing and troubleshooting network protocols such as TCP, UDP, DNS, RTP, QUIC, SIP, and other associated VoIP protocols.
  • Experience and understanding of IMS, 4G, and 5G 3GPP standards based networks and call flows.
  • Experience with the performance analysis and troubleshooting of IP networks using tools like tcpdump, iperf, tcptrace, or other software tools such as network protocol analyzers (Wireshark) and/or network performance tools.
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, project management and communication skills.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem solving abilities in order to quickly find solutions to problems where no previous examples or methods may exist.
  • The ability to work independently on routine research and report creation, while also collaborating with other teams when necessary to resolve problems or arrive at solutions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Google docs/drive.
  • Experience with cloud-native and open source platforms and tools such as Prometheus, Github, Kubernetes, Docker, OpenStack, Grafana, Prometheus, Jaeger, Elastic.
  • CCNA, CCNP, or similar IP networking certifications.
  • Wireshark or other protocol analyzer certification or experience.
  • Experience with programming/scripting and databases (Python, Java, SQL) or system administration.
