What you’ll be doing...

Device Technology is part of the GN&T organization and comprised of researchers, strategists, engineers, designers and domain experts from across all areas of the wireless industry. With our startup-like culture, the group consists of fast-moving teams working side-by-side, bringing all areas of expertise to bear developing Verizon's advanced technology solutions and next-generation products.

As part of Device Technology’s Systems Engineering team, the Distinguished Engineer will lead all device feature planning activities for the department. This key position will align with internal stakeholders and third parties to define the next generation of device functionality. The Distinguished Engineer will also lead 5G Slicing activities for Device Technology, responsible for defining the device framework and aligning with the company’s Slicing strategy to enable new customer experiences.

  • Lead all device/network feature planning for Device Technology, from initial definition to commercialization.
  • Interface with internal teams, device vendors, chipset vendors and network vendors to develop the appropriate device features specific to Verizon’s network implementation.
  • Develop device requirements, test plans, and test processes to allow for the implementation of various 3GPP specifications, in alignment with marketing and network needs.
  • Proactively look for areas to improve requirements and test plans.
  • Lead all of the team’s Slicing strategy and provide technical expertise to ensure a commercial path for device implementation.
  • Use years of development experience to manage new technology trials and evaluate the trial results for deployment optimization.
  • Head the analysis of future 5G features to determine the impact to device functionality, performance and user experience.
  • Clearly document and communicate design decisions, roadmaps and recommendations to executive management within Verizon.

What we’re looking for...

You'll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Six or more years of relevant work experience.

Even better if you have one or more of the following:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical/Electronics/Computer/RF Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Experience in the Telecommunications Industry.
  • Background experiencein R&D.
  • Experience with modem manufacturers.
  • Experience withhandset manufacturers.
  • Experience withnetwork equipment manufacturers and/or mobile operators.
  • Knowledge of LTE and 5G signaling or theory.
  • Knowledge of protocol stack layers 1, 2, and 3 (PHY, MAC, RLC, PDCP, RRC, NAS, IP).
  • Experience in new technology introduction and development.
  • Experience designing to and evaluating 3GPP, GSMA and other industry standards documents.
  • Knowledge of 3GPP, GSMA, and IETF standards.
  • Ability to work independently in an unstructured and dynamic environment.
  • Ability to take appropriate action to identify and resolve technical issues to closure.
  • Ability to escalateappropriately as required.
  • Ability to evaluate processes and optimize to increase efficiency.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Organization and interpersonal skills.
